Alice Richards Botanical Trail, located in Frederica Park, is where native plant species have been re-introduced to land that was used for timber farming for many years. The trail features a gazebo, children`s area of faerie houses for imaginary play and a labyrinth in the woods for a quiet and contemplative respite. Island garden clubs and other donors partnered with the Land Trust to complete the project.

“East Beach” is the name given to St. Simons Island Beach, the stretch of beach along the Oceanside of St. Simons Island. This is a great location for a range of beach activities, from relaxed shelling to extreme kite boarding, and everything in between. Because of the tides, the sand along East Beach is hard packed and suitable for biking. East Beach is made of smaller sections named after each beach access point. On the northern tip of East Beach, located at the end of Bruce Drive, is Gould’s Inlet, which has very limited parking. Just south of Gould’s Inlet, is the most popular beach location on the island named U.S. Coast Guard Station, after the historic coast guard station that still stands at the entrance today as the present home to the World War II Home Front Museum. Located between the Coast Guard Station and the King and Prince Resort, you will find a more secluded beach access point at Massengale Park. Depending on the tide, you can even access the southern point of East Beach at Pier Village. This is a great location to bike and fish at low tide, providing easy access to the village shops and the Neptune Park Fun Zone.

On the northern tip of East Beach, at the end of Bruce Drive, is Gould’s Inlet. Not primarily a beach destination, but rather a bird watching, fishing and ocean observation area. Here you can see the southern end of Sea Island, just across the river inlet, and observe many varieties of coastal birds. During your visit you will most likely encounter fishermen fishing off the boardwalk and along the beach, as well as paddleboarders off the distant sandbars catching some waves. This beach access location offers a shower, water hose, community water bowl for pets, dog bag station, benches and a fishing pier. Please note that there is limited parking.

This beautiful land, named Frederica Marsh, was generously donated to the St. Simons Land Trust in 2000 by Dorothy Gilbert. One of its most treasured features is the magnificent live oak in the center of the property, which Mrs. Gilbert affectionately named “John’s Oak” in honor of her late husband John Gilbert. The John Gilbert Trail is the Land Trust’s first interpretive trail. The trail is a natural gem right in the heart of St. Simons Island. As you pass through the four wooded areas, you see the climax maritime forest transition into the marsh border. From this edge there are several points at which you may rest and view the marsh. Look for interpretive signs to learn about the history of the land, the roles of our native vegetation, and the birds and animals that also visit this land. Learn more about the Golden Isles’ nature and wildlife. Please respect the environment by leaving each area you visit as you found it. Whether you spend time relaxing and playing on the beach or hiking a nature trail, “pack out what you packed in”. Thank you for helping us to keep the Golden Isles beautiful! Open daily, sunrise to sunset.

The Southeast Georgia Health System Fitness Trail is located adjacent to the St. Simons Immediate Care Center and Gascoigne Bluff on St. Simons Island. The trail opened in the fall of 2006 as part of the Health System’s dedication to promoting health and wellness through regular exercise. The half-mile, paved trail is open daily from daylight to dusk. It gracefully curves and winds its way through a forest of live oaks, cedars, bamboo, and other native plants while benches and fitness stations are strategically placed along the way. The trail is also accessible to anyone who is physically challenged, including those who must use a wheelchair or other mobility device. The entrance of the trail, which is located on Arthur J. Moore Drive, is marked by a wood and synthetic oyster tabby arbor that matches the architectural style used throughout the Golden Isles. The arbor was donated in memory of Dottie Castle, by her daughters, and the Sea Island Garden Group. The trail’s bamboo loop was made possible by a gift from Mike and Lucia Gumaer and is named in their honor.

Ask any local food service professional where they go out, when they go out, and chances are the answer will be, “Delaney’s”. In this relaxed, comfortable, intimate bistro which is not too formal “nor too casual” food and wine are the stars. They are both under the inspired direction of Chef Tom Delaney whose philosophy is pretty straightforward: “I cook what I like.” The Chef refers to his menu as “earthy stuff.” “We are at the beach,” he explains. You will find fish as well as game, lamb, and meat all expertly prepared with traditional techniques and the freshest, best ingredients. Pairing is a Delaney specialty. “Some of the match-ups with the food and wine will blow you away,” he modestly proffered. “I like wine” that is my inspiration.” One never knows what may be concocted back in the kitchen. A recent offering was chocolate soup (yes, chocolate soup) topped with hazelnut cream. Delaney’s is entering its 19th year on St. Simons. Chef Tom explained, “We love the people here. We have great customers, and we get to know them!” Come join the local regulars who return again and again to experience the best cuisine the Golden Isles has to offer.
