If you want to spend a day marveling at these structures, consider staying with St. Simons Island Beach Rentals. It’s easy to get to and from many of the island’s attractions, including lighthouses. Not only that, but we have some of the best vacation rentals not far from the ocean waters.
Best Lighthouses On St. Simons Island
Various styles and a rich history are waiting for you on St. Simons Island. Don’t walk by these towering lighthouses on the island.
St. Simons Lighthouse
This is the best place to start your journey. The St. Simons Lighthouse is located near the St. Simons Pier and offers an amazing view of the area once you climb its roughly 130 steps. But this panoramic view shouldn’t be missed.
Also, don’t pass by the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum. It’s filled with interesting history. You’ll learn that the lighthouse has been through a lot. The original lighthouse was built in the early 1800s. However, Confederate troops destroyed it in 1861. It wasn’t until 1872 that it was rebuilt, and with it, a two-story home for the lighthouse keepers that they used until the 1950s.
Overall, it is a wonderful attraction. If you visit during the summer, be sure to attend the Little Light Music Concert Series.
Little Cumberland Island Lighthouse
If you head down past Jekyll Island, you might spot the Little Cumberland Island Lighthouse. This lighthouse is privately owned, so your best bet is to see it from the sea or get permission from the owner. It is, however, on the National Register of Historic Places.
Sapelo Island Range Front Light
In the opposite direction, if you head north, you should see the Sapelo Island Range Front Light. This smaller lighthouse also saw some action in the American Civil War. The structure was erected in the 1850s but was later damaged during the war. It was replaced in 1868 and then fell into disrepair. That’s until 1877 until now where the current iron structure still stands.
